About Us (P.A.E.T)

Who We Are

The Pancyprian Association of English Teachers (P.A.E.T.), affiliated with OELMEK, is the official professional association representing English language teachers serving in public secondary education in Cyprus.

Since its establishment, the Association has aimed to support, promote and strengthen the teaching of English through professional collaboration, educational development and active participation in the wider educational community.

Our History

P.A.E.T. was founded in 1973 under the initiative of Mr Christos Psiloinis, who served as the first Chairman of the Association, with Mr Costas Marcou serving as its first Secretary. The following board, chaired by Mr Andreas Georgiades, included among others Alekos Shiantos, Costas Metaxas and Costas Marcou.

During its early years, the Association focused primarily on professional and employment-related issues affecting English language teachers in the public sector, promoting fairness, professional recognition and the principle of “Equal Work, Equal Pay”.

After a period of inactivity, the Association was revitalised in 1990 under the chairmanship of Mrs Stella Conti Theocharous. From that point onwards, P.A.E.T. placed increasing emphasis on teacher training, professional development and educational innovation.

Our Mission

Today, P.A.E.T. aims to promote excellence in English language teaching and contribute to the continuous improvement of education in Cyprus.

The Association seeks to:

  • encourage the exchange of knowledge, ideas and good practices among educators,

  • support research and innovation in language teaching,

  • promote contemporary teaching methodologies and educational technologies,

  • strengthen teachers’ professional development,

  • and foster collaboration both within Cyprus and internationally.

Recognising the expertise, creativity and evolving needs of English language teachers, P.A.E.T. actively supports lifelong learning and professional growth through conferences, seminars, workshops, presentations and educational initiatives.

Professional Development & Collaboration

A central priority of the Association is the provision of continuous professional development opportunities for teachers of English.

Over the years, P.A.E.T. has organised and supported:

  • educational conferences,

  • teacher training seminars,

  • webinars,

  • workshops,

  • Erasmus+ initiatives,

  • intercultural projects,

  • and collaborations with local and international educational organisations.

Through collective effort and the sharing of experiences, the Association aims to foster a dynamic professional community that encourages innovation, creativity and educational excellence.

Governance

P.A.E.T. is administered by an elected Committee chosen by the General Assembly of members every three years. In order to better organise and implement its work, the Committee may establish specialised sub-committees focusing on particular educational, professional or organisational areas.

The Association continues to evolve while remaining committed to its founding principles: professional solidarity, educational quality and meaningful support for teachers of English in Cyprus.
